Start Sailing

Warm weather, light winds and plenty of sunshine made learning to sail easy this last weekend. In all eight newcomers to the sport achieved their level one certificates, and left on Sunday evenings with big smiles on their faces. They are all determined to come back and refine their newly acquired skills. Saturday was spent in double handers with an instructor on board to start with. By mid-afternoon the instructors had jumped ship and were supervising from the powerboats. Such was the enjoyment (or was it the heat) that some did the obligatory capsize drill twice.
Sunday was spent in the single handers learning how to gybe. Of course just when the gybing land drill were finished the wind got up. We expected a few spills but such was the expertise on display that everyone stayed upright.
As always the course finished with sailing a triangular course which everyone managed with some degree of aplomb. Congratulations to everyone undertaking the course and thanks to the instructors and safety boat crews for your hard work and giving of your time.
