    Club Sailing 20/06/21 Club regatta

A big thank you to everyone who came along and raced on Sunday in the Club Regatta, and to Deborah and Paul, who volunteered as OOD and SBO respectively, so that as many sailors could get out on the water as possible. Over the four races we saw some excellent racing and some of the most competitive starts at the club in recent years. The racing took place in a shifty light breeze that demanded

The weekend saw five adults starting sailing and working towards their RYA level 1 and one sailor who took his level 1 at the start of the season doing a Level 2 course. Saturday sailing was challenging for all as the wind was far from kind and the majority had to learn their capsize drills very quickly. However they remained in good spirits and with support of our instructors made excellent progress. Sunday

Visit of Dehenna Davison MP to the club

The Sailing Club celebrated the completion of five weeks of training to some novice junior sailors this week, having completed Stages 1 and 2 of the RYA On Board Scheme. This course was made possible by gaining grant funding to replace our junior fleet boats. The completion of the course was also accompanied by a visit by Dehenna Davison MP, who had perviously visited the Club in 2020 - Northumbria Water had been carrying

Today was our inaugural pursuit race of the season however the wind had other ideas, the occasional gust came through the lake but the competitors spent a lot of the race enjoying the sunshine rather than doing any pursuing. The finish despite the lack of wind was very close with Richard's Miracle pipping Dave's Enterprise to the post by a matter of seconds. Good fun was had by all and we will all go

Warm weather and favourable breezes brought the racers out. A handicap fleet involving Optimists to Lasers enjoyed some competitive racing. The Lasers in particular had a number of hard fought battles. In the middle of the fleet the Miracle, GP14 and Enterprise contested the marks with gusto. It was the end of the Spring series and the race and series results will be available shortly.

We were blessed with very sporting winds on Sunday. A slightly slow start out of the car park, changed into an almost Le Mans style frenetic activity by the time we saw the wind - the lake was calling and we were keen to answer. The briefest of checks of the race course and away we go. Some seemed to take the whole race thing to another level, checking their boat was sparkling

Our Junior sailors are coming on leaps and bounds through the onboard program we have been offering every Saturday. This week we were able to congratulate six of our sailors on achieving their RYA stage 1 and two sailors on achieving their RYA stage 2. We are looking forward to awarding more stages in the coming weeks to some of our other sailors who are close on their heels.

Owing to the weather on Saturday the scheduled RYA onboard course was postponed to the Sunday which meant that the shore line was particularly busy with lots of young sailors hitting the water for the first time. The wind was a variable on Sunday but the students were able to get out for both morning and afternoon sessions and with club members sailing as well it was a great sight to see so many boats
